Cat Dail & the Magnets are a 5-piece band (2 guitars, bass, drums and keys) with a lot of talent and a decidedly indie groove. The band collaborates on the music and Dail provides the lyrics. Dail also produced this latest offering "Shimmer Glow" (release, Feb 2011.)
Award winning singer/ songwriter/ guitarist/ producer, Cat Dail has been part of the NYC indie music scene since fronting her successful 90s band, distant cousins. The cousins released 2 records with wild success for an unsigned band. They sold ten thousand records, and merch, off stages to a robust and loyal fan base. Distant cousins achieved CMJ stature, and toured the country playing to their mostly college radio audience. They were fixtures in the NYC club scene and played all the best places (including CBGBs, the Lone Star, the Mercury and regular Friday nights at the Bitter End), always packing the house.
Dail went on to record her first solo cd, "Choice" in 2004. Featuring Tom 'Bones' Malone (Blues Brothers Horns) and other luminaries, the record was produced by Dail & Grammy winner, Harvey Jay Goldberg (Stevie Wonder, the Rolling Stones, plus, plus!) "Choice" also marked the origins of the Magnets with stellar guitarist, Joel Newton (Joel Newton Situation, Christian Howes, Matt Shulman), and brilliant keyboardist, Aaron Whitby (George Clinton, Martha Redbone), joining in.
"Shimmer Glow" brings Dail, Newton and Whitby together, again, with Dail's original distant cousins rhythm section of Bill Berry and John Kim. It's a compact, extremely able group, producing remarkable arrangements with lush results. The styles visited are eclectic: rock, funk, disco, reggae, alt. country... but they all come together because the band has a definitive, signature style. Dail's vocals are bang on, full of emotion and whimsy, velvet. The Magnets play beats, solos, fills with a high level of agility, passion and fun. Flavors of rain stick, Be-bot, and more, spice this record to great taste. This cd is one for people who really like music!
Guest performances by Joe 'Mama' Holland (harmonica), Rob DiPietro and Koko Jones (both percussion), and Martha Redbone and Ilie Kochie (both additional vocals) give "Shimmer Glow" texture and relay the open, happy, collaborative vibe of the band.
Beautifully recorded by Teddy Kumpel (Feist, Nine Inch Nails, Rickie Lee Jones); masterfully mixed, again, by Harvey Jay Goldberg (Late Show with David Letterman); and perfectly mastered by another Grammy winner, Gene Paul of G&J Audio, the record *sounds* fantastic! The album art is very cool and was created by renowned NYC designer, Roxana Ramseur (Met Opera, Broadway, Narciso Rodriguez).

"Many of the most creative Artists, especially from the 60's & 70's, were Rock songwriters who had no fear in exploring any genre that might have influenced them along the way. Cat Dail & the Magnets take us on a "sonic roller-coaster ride" of all the genres that influenced her, without any trepidation of making them their own."
"Shimmer Glow" is a lively, joyful, quirky musical adventure. Cat Dail & the Magnets interpret pop, rock, folk, country, African and reggae modes in bold and unexpected ways. Dail's voice is full of personality and warm, soulful textures. Her lyrics are imaginative and compelling. The tunes radiate a catchiness and accessibility that's deeply satisfying without being predictable or lacking dimension. Accomplished in it's production, the instruments create their own show with complimentary lines, thematic finger picking sequences and pulsing grooves, somehow never crowding each other and never distracting from the main, vocal event. "
"Choice" is the first solo release from singer/songwriter/guitarist Cat Dail (leader of 90's NYC faves the Distant Cousins) and showcases an eclectic range of styles, a host of rockin' grooves, and smart, funny lyrics to touch your head and your heart. The album features top players from the NY club and studio scene and is produced by Dail and Grammy-winner Harvey Jay Goldberg. This is an album you will come back to again and again, always finding something new to put a smile on your face. Choose "Choice."
"I also wanted to tell you to check out Cat Dail's new record, 'Choice.' It's featured prominently on both my iTunes and iPod and I've really gotten into it. Hard to single (or double or triple) out the highlights, but I have an especially good time with the horns on "Squeeze Your Play"- I thought of Stax-Volt and Herb Alpert even before reading the liner notes. I really dig the syncopated take on "Tired of Waiting for You" — always a Kinks favorite for me. And the wit of "White Chicks in Jamaica" transcends surfer and ska modes. Plenty of Choice here. I love the sounds. "
